Nanopores
We are interested in developing ultra-confined nanopore systems and measurement schemes for understanding the fundamental fluidic transport, biological physics and making technological applications.
Single-Molecule Measurements
We are exploring new experimental techniques that may enable single-molecule manipulation and measurements in aqueous solutions and in live cells. Particularly, we have developped electrical tweezers and “quantum patch clamp”.
Super-Resolution Imaging
We are developing new microscopy methodologies for delivering nanoscale optical imaging with both high spatial and temporal resolution, with an aim of enlightening localized dynamic chemcial and physical events in chemistry and biology. We have built a chemical microscopy using single reactions for imaging.

Prof. Jiandong Feng/冯建东
Principal Investigator
Jiandong Feng is a Full Professor and a Qiushi Distinguished Professor at Zhejiang University.
He first studied engineering and then received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Zhejiang University, and obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 2016. In 2018, Dr. Feng established the Laboratory of Experimental Physical Biology at Zhejiang University. He is a doctoral supervisor of chemistry and of optics.
Jiandong Feng is a recipient of the 2024 Xplorer Prize, the 2023 Young Analytical Chemist Award in China, the 2021 Youth Award from the Chinese Chemical Societry, the 2017 EPFL Doctorate Award, and the 2016 EPFL Future Leaders in Bioengineering Award.

Hongzhen Bai is an associate professor in the Laboratory of Experimental Physical Biology at Zhejiang University.
He earned his Ph.D. in Control Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University. From 2017–2021, he had been a postdoctoral fellow in Department of Chemistry from Zhejiang University, focusing on materials science and engineering. In 2024, he joined the Laboratory of Experimental Physical Biology under Prof. Feng’s leadership, devoting to the development of single-molecule measurement systems and biomolecular sensing technologies for life sciences.

Zhang Chen is an Associate Investigator at the Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University, and a member of the Laboratory of Experimental Physical Biology at Zhejiang University.
She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biophysics from Wuhan University. In 2024, Dr. Zhang joined the Laboratory of Experimental Physical Biology at Zhejiang University. Her primary research interest is single-molecule biophysics, focusing on applying advanced experimental methods including magnetic tweezers and quantum sensing to decipher the conformational transition of nucleic acid molecules and the molecular mechanism of cellular stress response.
